ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ President Eduardo M. Peñalver has announced that he will step down March 31, 2026, to become the next president of Georgetown University.

“This was not an easy decision,” Peñalver said, “but one I make with gratitude for all that we have accomplished together and confidence in the university’s continued momentum. While I am excited about the opportunity to continue my work in Jesuit higher education at such a pivotal moment, I am also sad to be leaving ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ and the Pacific Northwest, which will always be my home.”

Peñalver, who has led ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ since 2021, leaves behind a legacy of growth and innovation. During his presidency, the university launched new academic programs, returned to the West Coast Conference, welcomed the Hedreen art collection and integrated Cornish College of the Arts into the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ community. He also guided the institution through a period of significant change with a steady and mission-driven hand.

“Serving as your president has been a great honor,” Peñalver said, reflected in a message to the campus community. “I am especially proud of the ways we have lived out our Jesuit values by centering the dignity of every person and providing an excellent education that prepares our students to lead meaningful lives in service of a just and humane world.”

“Eduardo has guided our university with vision and integrity through a period of significant transformation,” said Pat Callans, chair of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ’s Board of Trustees. “His contributions have strengthened our academic mission, deepened our Jesuit, Catholic identity and positioned ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ for continued success. We are profoundly thankful for his service and partnership.”

As Callans outlined to the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ community, the board will begin a presidential search immediately. Initial steps will include establishing a search committee, led by the board and partnering with a national firm.

To ensure continuity, ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Chancellor and President Emeritus Stephen Sundborg, S.J., pending final board approval, will serve as interim president beginning April 1, 2026. Father Sundborg’s deep knowledge of the university and its mission will provide stability during this transition. The board’s goal is to appoint the next president by fall 2026.
